Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh will be going on a 3-day visit to Russia beginning Monday to attend a grand military parade in Moscow which marks the 75th anniversary of Soviet Victory over Germany during WWII.
In the midst of an ongoing crisis between India and China, Defence Minister will also be speaking with Russian authorities to expedite the delivery of Russia’s S-400 anti-missile system which would be helpful amid India-China standoff.
“Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will pay a visit to Moscow to attend the victory parade on June 24 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Second World War,” the defense ministry said in a statement.
Officials said that due to the old-military ties with Russia, Mr. Singh departed to Russia and going ahead to visit the parade.
“I wish a safe journey to Defence Minister of strategic partner India @rajnathsingh who is scheduled to depart to Moscow on Monday to witness the Great Victory Day Military Parade on June 24,” Russian Ambassador Nikolay Kudashev tweeted.
Also, the minister will be speaking to expedite the process of the S-400 anti-missile system which Moscow had delayed delivery due to the pandemic. India had completed most of the payment last year and was expecting the delivery of these systems.
While victory day parade is a planned event, there were doubts about any people attending due to ongoing pandemic. However, after consulting with PMO of India, Mr. Singh has decided to go ahead with his visit to Russia and also help secure some of the best opportunities with Russian counterparts.
It is believed that Chinese defense minister Wei Fenghe will also be present at the venue. Mr. Rajnath Singh is slated to have separate bilateral meet with Russian counterparts Yury Borisov and Sergei Shoigu where matters of defense, weapon system, and spares will be discussed.
