NEW DELHI: The Delhi government approved an increase from Rs 1.5 Rs. per kilometer on Friday, raising the rate from Rs 8 to Rs 9.5 The “counting rate” was also revised from 25 rupees for the first 2 km to 25 rupees per 1.5 km.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said the new rates would be applicable after the recalibration of rickshaw electronic speedometers.
The department would inform the revised tariff structure in a few days and then start the recalibration. The rates for the city auto’s were last revised in May 2013.
The taxi fares, Gramin Sewa and RTV will be reviewed in the coming days.
Mr. Gahlot stated that the approval of LG Anil Baijal was not necessary, stating that the tariff review was not a “reserved issue”.

The Delhi cabinet has given the green light to increase the rates of autorickshaws.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said the committee formed by the Delhi government to make recommendations on the review of rates for autorickshaws and other modes of transportation revised Mumbai rates and also took into account the increase in transport costs, fuel, and maintenance, as well as inflation, before finalizing the new rates.
The committee was chaired by Anil Banka, the transport commissioner, and included other senior officials of the transport department, as well as representatives of several social welfare associations of Delhi residents and a representative of the student community.
To ensure that autorickshaws do not refuse to follow blocked routes or that they do not see normal traffic jams, the government has also decided to allow drivers to charge an additional 75 paise for every minute the vehicle stops or moves with the Speed less than 6 km per hour.
The minister added that auto-rickshaws can also charge 75 paise per minute, as waiting charges. In accordance with the existing fare structure, the waiting charges begin only after 15 minutes of stay. There is no change in the night rate and baggage fees.
Mr. Gahlot stated that the Legal Department had already reviewed the new fee structure and that the file approved by the firm would now be sent to the Department of Transportation for notification.
The sources said, however, that the transportation service could not issue a rate review notification without LG’s approval.

Motor carrier unions have been asking for a tariff review for a long time. Under the pressure of the drivers, considered as a bank with the right to vote of the Aam Aadmi Party, the government agreed to revise the tariff in 2016 and again in July 2018. But the plan had to be suspended after certain reservations of the car unions.
However, unions are not happy with the increase in car rates. “We have been betrayed by the PAA government, the rate should have been increased to Rs.10 per kilometer, what we had requested and the passengers are willing to offer,” said Sanjay Chawla, president of Delhi Pradesh Tipahiya Chalak Mahasangh.
“While long-distance travelers were driven by application-based taxis, short-haul travelers are trapped by rickshaws and bus drivers do not earn enough to survive,” he said.
“The price increase is an electoral contraption.” We wanted Rs. 10 per kilometer and 25 rupees for the first kilometer, “said Rajendra Soni, general secretary of Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh.”
