UPI Payment Rule 2023 for Foreign Travelers: The Reserve Bank of India has decided to allow all inbound travelers to use UPI payments for merchant payments while they are in India. This facility will initially be extended to travelers from G20 countries arriving at selected international airports, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said.
Commenting on RBI’s decision, Rajsri Rengan, Head of Banking and Payments, India and Philippines, FIS, said: “RBI’s announcement of expanding UPI facilities for inbound travelers to India is a great initiative. Visitors coming to India can now use UPI while conducting P2M transactions. This is a great initiative to expand the use of digital payments in India and improve your payment experience.
Recently, UPI access was provided to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) with international mobile numbers linked to their NRE/NRO accounts. The facility will soon be available to all incoming travelers, starting with those from G20 countries.
How the UPI payment will work for foreign travelers
As per the RBI’s recent statement UPI payment facility will be initially for travelers from G20 countries.
- The facility will be available in selected airports for time being and later it extends everywhere.
- Merchant payments can be done through UPI.
