The US virtually has bought all the stocks of Remdesivir which is touted to be one of the drugs which will help to treat coronavirus and the rest of the world will not be able to purchase the drug for at least the next 3 months.
Experts are worried by the actions from the US and also on the wider implication, for instance when the event of vaccine is available in the next few months or days. The Trump administration has already shown its preparedness against the pandemic that has ravaged the country where thousands of people are dying every day.
“They’ve got access to most of the drug supply [of remdesivir], so there’s nothing for Europe,” said Dr. Andrew Hill, a senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University.
Remdesivir, made by Gilead is the first drug that has shown effective treatment against COVID-19 and the first batch of drugs sent for trials has been used up. The first batch consisted of 150,000 drugs and now the US has bought over 500,000 drugs which are about 90% of Gilead production in July, August, and September.
Alex Azar, the US health and human services secretary said “President Trump has struck an amazing deal to ensure Americans have access to the first authorized therapeutic for Covid-19,” he continued “To the extent possible, we want to ensure that any American patient who needs Remdesivir can get it. The Trump administration is doing everything in our power to learn more about life-saving therapeutics for Covid-19 and secure access to these options for the American people.”
The drug which was invented for Ebola but had failed to work is under the patent of Gilead and it means nobody in other countries can manufacture. The drug costs $3,200 per treatment of six doses said the statement from the US Government.
