Veteran comedian Jagdeep who goes by his real name Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri passed away late evening on 08th July 2020. He was 81 when he took his last breath and he passed away owing to his old-age.
Jagdeep was known for his role as Soorma Bhopali in Ramesh Sippy blockbuster hit Sholay.
Born as Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri on March 29, 1939, in Amritsar his story is basically from rags to riches. He went to Mumbai from Amritsar at a very young age where he landed for the sets for the film ‘Afsana’ which promised him Rs 3 as a fee. After Afsana, Jagdeep started picking up small roles such as child artiste in Munna, Laila Majnu, Aar Paar, etc.
Later he acted with lead roles such as in films like Bhabhi, Barkha but Shammi Kapoor starrer movie ‘Brahmachari’ was where he got recognized for his role as a comedian in that movie.
He had a prolific career later onwards, but his role as Soorma Bhopali in blockbuster movie Sholay became so popular the Soorma Bhopali name became the second moniker for the actor.
Jagdeep has acted over 400 films wherein the 70s, 80s, and 90s he was a familiar face in Hindi movies. His last movie was ‘Masti Nahi Sasti’ which released in the year 2017 also starred veteran actors like Kader Khan, Johnny Lever, Shakti Kapoor, and Prem Chopra.
Actors Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee, Ayushmaan Khurrana, Sanjay Mishra, Johnny Lever, and director Hansal Mehta took to social media to pay tributes to the great artiste.
He is survived by his son’s producer Naved and actor Jaaved who are popular in Film Industry.
