WhatsApp has limited the duration of videos that can be uploaded for status in India. A WABetaInfo report said that this feature is specifically targeted at Indian users. It is now available on iPhone and iOS in the country. WhatsApp started implementing the functionality starting today and is expected to gradually reach all users.
Previously, users could upload up to 30 seconds of video as WhatsApp status. The messaging platform has now limited the duration of the video to upload the status to 15 seconds. With the new feature, Facebook’s proprietary messaging platform requires users to trim any video for more than 15 seconds and only then can it be published as a status.
According to the WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp introduced this feature to reduce the load on their servers that has increased since the time people started staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously said that they are seeing very high levels of WhatsApp calls in countries facing the COVID-19 crisis.
Once the situation is stable, WhatsApp will remove the time limit from the video, according to the report. There is still no official WhatsApp declaration on the matter.
